A number of Red Deer businesses and residences were left without power due to an unplanned outage on Thursday.

At about 1 p.m. on Thursday, the city stated on social media that crews were responding to the outage.

"They hope to have power restored to many residences and (businesses) soon, but do not have a timeline for full restoration at the moment," the city said on Twitter.

For safety reasons, the City of Red Deer doesn't state exact locations of outages, but "affected areas are in the northwest parts of the city."

In a followup tweet, posted at 3:32 p.m., the City stated power was restored to all customers.

"Thank you for your patience," the tweet said.

The city's website offers a number of tips for people when their power is out:

  • Never go near a fallen power line.
  • Call 911 for life threatening or emergency situations.
  • Gather your emergency kit.
  • Check your breaker panel or fuse box.
  • Turn off tools, appliances and equipment.
  • Turn down thermostat to minimum.
  • Turn off all lights, except one so that you know when power is back on.
  • Do not use outdoor equipment (camp stove, lantern, barbecue, etc.) inside your home.
  • Never plug a portable generator into a household outlet.
  • Keep your refrigerator and freezer closed. Food in a full freezer will remain frozen for 24 to 36 hours. Dairy products should be discarded after six hours.
  • Anticipate traffic delays. If traffic lights are off, treat the intersection as a four way stop. If traffic lights are flashing: amber, proceed with caution; red, come to a complete stop and proceed when it’s safe to do so.

After the power is restored, the City of Red Deer suggests residents turn on essential appliances first. Then after 10-15 minutes reset the thermostat, make sure the refrigerator and freezer are back on, reset clocks and automatic timers, and restock an emergency kit if used.
