Art portraying Central Alberta’s people and landscapes can be seen at May 3 gallery receptions

Many Red Deer galleries will be open later Friday, for evening receptions

Portraits, fibre works and watercolours can be seen at Red Deer’s First Friday art gallery openings for May.

Works inspired by the rich tapestries of Alberta’s landscapes, wildlife and people can be seen in the exhibit Emotions of Fibre: Artworks by Erin Davis in the Red Deer Arts Council’s Community Gallery until May 27. This show features needle-felting, weaving and other techniques that blend texture, colour and form. There’s a May 3 First Friday reception from 5-7 p.m.

Being Human: Portraits of Homelessness, by artist Lana Michelin, is showing at the Red Deer Museum and Art Gallery. Meet some of the clients from Safe Harbour’s homeless shelter in this series of portraits, which were created to raise awareness and understanding of the many challenges our shelter neighbours face. The exhibition goes to Aug. 10. The First Friday opening reception is from 5-8 p.m.

The Watercolour Wonders Painting Group has created the exhibit, Blossoms, Bugs and Beauty at the Marjorie Wood Gallery in the Kerry Wood Nature Centre. These forals, landscapes, reptiles and insect paintings can be seen until June 24. A 4-6 p.m. reception will be held on First Friday.

Members of the Lettering Arts Guild of Red Deer present Wordscapes, a Calligraphic Experience. The mixed-media exhibit is showing from May 3 to June 27 at the Viewpoint Gallery in the Red Deer Culture Centre. A First Friday reception will be held from 6-8 p.m.

Middle School artists from Red Deer’s Glendale, Eastview, Gateway and G.H. Dawe schools have created The 39th Annual Awesome Art Show at the Kiwanis Gallery in the downtown public library. This exhibit runs to May 20 and is presented by the Red Deer Arts Council. There’s a Friday reception from 5:30-7:30 p.m.

- Flower You Today? Floral-themed works by Lyn Anderson, Marlene Kallstrom-Barritt, Brad Olstad, Christel Langan, Peter Caden, Barbi Hofer, Wendy Meeres and Audrey Rits are showing to May 29 at Curiosity Art and Framing at 5002-48th Street in Red Deer.

- Olivia Motley’s mixed-media paintings aim to convey the beauty of the Earth, and can be seen in the Corridor Community Gallery, downstairs in the Red Deer Recreation Centre until May 31.
