All charges against a Blackfalds RCMP officer accused of theft have been dismissed or stayed.

Charges of theft under $5,000 and possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000 were dismissed by a judge for Cpl. Brandon Smith following a one-day trial in Red Deer Court of Justice earlier this month.

A second set of identical charges were stayed by the Crown prosecutor. A stay means the Crown has decided not to proceed with prosecution on the charges. The prosecution can be reactivated within a year but that is very rare.

Smith was charged in July 2023 following an investigation that began in May 2022. It was alleged at the time Smith had taken exhibits from the Blackfalds detachment.
