A GoFundMe has been launched for a teen who was injured while riding an e-scooter on Lakeshore Drive Friday.
Sylvan Lake RCMP received reports of the accident around 10 p.m.
"Upon arrival, emergency crews tended to a 19-year-old victim who was transported by STARS to hospital with serious injuries," Cpl. Troy Savinkoff said.
Through its investigation, RCMP were able to find out more on the cause, he added.
"The investigation revealed that the victim was on an e-scooter when they approached a friend driving by in a truck. The victim rode up to the vehicle and held on when they suddenly fell and went under the truck. Alcohol was not a factor in the incident."
The GoFundMe for 19-year-old Avery Weik, which was created on Saturday, has already raised over $21,000 surpassing its goal of $10,000.
On the GoFundMe page, Kaiden Reichert who started the fundraiser, wrote that what happened was a freak accident.
"He was treated on scene and transported by ground to Red Deer, where STARS was waiting for him to take him to Calgary. He is in the ICU, intubated and waiting for surgery."
His injuries are to his brain, head, and face, Reichert wrote.
"Without getting too much into the details of his injuries, the family has been told by every doctor and nurse that worked on him that his recovery so far has been miraculous."
Weik is awake at times and communicating with pen and paper and hand signs, Reichert added.
"He is so positive, inquisitive, cooperative and relaxed. He's always been the brightest smile in any room, he's the first one to offer help, and is one of the most kind, caring kids you'll ever meet."
As he awaits surgery/recovery support is very important, Reichert wrote.
"We ask for continued prayers as he waits for surgery and then begins this journey of recovery. We ask not only for prayers of healing but also of prayers for the surgeons who will perform his very complicated surgery."
