Olds RCMP are warning that a gold jewellery scam is making the rounds. Typically, the scammers approach their intended marks at parking lots, gas stations or other public places and offer gold jewellery for sale, as gifts, or even in trade for fuel. Not surprisingly, the jewellery offered at bargain basement prices is fake. "The suspects often say that they have lost their bank card and are unable to access funds to continue their trip and can, on occasion, be aggressive when approaching people when offering the items for sale," said RCMP in a Friday news release. The scammers are often driving newer rental vehicles, that may include domestic SUVs or higher-end German vehicles, such as Mercedes and Audis. They sometimes have children with them. The suspects may also be selling stolen perfumes and colognes. "These types of incidents can be considered fraud or false pretences and are criminal offences," said police. "If you are approached by someone trying to sell gold jewellery, avoid getting involved and call your local police right away to report the incident." If possible, those who have been approached are asked to provide licence plate numbers or photos of the suspects and their vehicles. Anyone with information regarding frauds within Olds, should contact Olds RCMP at 403-556-3324.
