Red Deer RCMP is offering safety tips to residents for the Canada Day long weekend.

"As Canada Day weekend approaches, your Red Deer RCMP would like to remind residents to prioritize safety while celebrating," Red Deer RCMP said in a media release on Friday.

  • Plan your transportation, especially for those who plan to drink;
  • Be mindful of crowds and have a plan if you and your group get separated;
  • Stay hydrated;
  • Be aware of your surroundings because large gatherings can be targets for pickpockets;
  • Respect noise levels and be considerate of your neighbours by adhering to local noise bylaws;
  • Keep pets indoors and away from loud noises like fireworks and make sure they have proper identification in case they get lost;
  • Have a list of emergency contacts and know the locations of the nearest medical facilities;
  • If you’re planning activities near water, ensure everyone wears life jackets and knows how to swim, and never leave children unattended near water.

"Red Deer RCMP will have an increased presence throughout the weekend to ensure the safety of all residents and visitors. We encourage everyone to celebrate responsibly and look out for one another."

Anyone with information regarding any illegal activity within the City of Red Deer is asked to call Red Deer RCMP at 403-406-2200. To remain anonymous, people can contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477, online at www.P3Tips.com or by using the "P3 Tips" app.
