A Red Deer teacher has received national recognition for her contributions to the STEM program at Glendale Sciences and Technology School.

Lindsay Unland, science lead teacher at the kindergarten to Grade 8 school, was recently awarded a Prime Minister’s Award for Teaching Excellence in STEM Regional Certificate Of Achievement.

The award acknowledges inspirational science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM) teachers at the elementary or secondary school level who keep students engaged in STEM learning and who help develop the culture of innovation in Canada.

Unland said she was deeply touched by colleagues' letters in support of her nomination, and it was an honour just to be nominated.

"I have so much respect for my colleagues that I get to work with every day. We're part of team, together, doing what we're doing here," said Unland, who coordinates all of the science and technology activities for students.

Unland organized the very popular October Hallo-STEAM Night where students and their families took part in fun activities that ranged from dry ice experiments to crafting slime to creating circuit wands.

She said giving students opportunities to participate in activities makes science more relatable and is key to encouraging their curiosity.

“At Glendale, we have scheduled collaborative time with our Grade 1 to 5 teachers to discuss and explore the curriculum and brainstorm activities and lessons. I take those brainstormed ideas and help develop hands-on, engaging activities for students.

She also enjoys working with Grade 6, 7 and 8 students through teaching STEM-related option courses.

Unland began her teaching career in 2007, this was her second year at Glendale.

Principal Sandre Bevan said Unland has completely transformed how the school teaches STEM.

“Thanks to her leadership, STEM is now a vital part of our educational approach, not just a label. Students have developed a newfound passion for science under her guidance," Bevan said.

"Lindsay's remarkable impact on STEM education at Glendale truly makes her deserving of the Prime Minister's Award for Teaching Excellence.”
