Garage sales are happening every week as a summertime fundraiser for the Central Alberta Crime Prevention Centre.

Instead of having one big garage sale in August, as in years past, the centre that helps educate the community about crime reduction is opening its office to the public for a garage sale every week until Aug. 24.

Every Thursday through Saturday, bikes, chairs, purses, suitcases, clothing, kitchen gadgets, games, puzzles, movies, linens, footware, tools and more are are being put out for the public's perusal at the centre's office. Access is from the west side of the Baymont Inn.

The weekly garage sales run Thursdays and Fridays from 3 to 7 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Cards and cash are accepted.

Denise Rambow, the centre's programs and services co-ordinator said about $20,000 was raised from the annual big garage sale that had been held at the Pidherney Centre. Since this year's event couldn't be held there, more garage sale items are being introduced every day to the centre's office.

Rambow believes there's been a good public reaction to the smaller sales with several hundred people coming through each week.

The Central Alberta Crime Prevention Centre will use the money to continue holding workshops, such as educating the community about crime prevention through environmental design, and other programs, she added. Special 50 per cent off dates will be during the Christmas in July sale on July 25-27, as well as the last weekend, Aug. 22-24.

Donations of diverse goods will be accepted throughout the summer.

Drop-offs can be made to the centre from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Mondays through Wednesdays, or centre volunteers can arrange for a pickup if items are left out on the lawn. Rambow said large furniture and appliances cannot be accepted —  nor can mattresses, cribs, car seats, or construction materials.
