Musicians set to entertain at the Alberta Women concert

Musicians Amy Bishop, Michelle Colby, Terry Morrison and Debra Power will be swapping songs and stories on Saturday night in Red Deer.

Their joint Alberta Women concert will be presented at the Elk’s Lodge on Nov. 18 by the Central Music Festival Society.

The four singer/songwriters from diverse backgrounds will be sharing their song inspirations and reminiscing “about their journeys through life.” Since the format for the concert is wide open, “we expect a very special and spontaneous experience for all who attend,” say organizers.

Power is known for her powerhouse vocals and boogie-woogie piano playing. A staple on the Calgary blues scene, Power got the Carolina Blues Music Award for Keyboard Player of the Year (2014) and Blues Album of the Year recognition at the YYC Music Awards (2016). She was nominated for a Maple Blues Awards in 2017. Her third album, I’m Not From Chicago has gained global airplay, featuring the hit single, What Colour Is Love.

Bishop is a Calgarian with a multi-octave voice that’s been described as a mix of smooth pavement and rough gravel. She began her music career by singing around campfires and in a church choir. Bishop has since collaborated with Moby, opened for April Wine, Farmer’s Daughter, and Chris Cummings. She was also a finalist on CTV’s The Launch.

Morrison is an Alberta Métis singer/songwriter from Nanton. An accomplished guitar player, Morrison also has a unique sense of melody and phrasing. Her original songs have been credited for encompassing compassion and intelligence. They can be heard on her six released CDs.

Colby is a Red Deer musician and singer/songwriter, originally from Drayton Valley, who has performed at the Canadian Finals Rodeo, at Westerner Days, local bars, cabarets and markets around central Alberta — and at shows around the province. She often sings with her band, Soul Balm.
