Red Deer Public Schools has a plan to upgrade the building envelope of West Park Elementary School next year.

Last week the Board of Trustees approved a $1.7-million plan that will increase thermal comfort for students and staff, increase fresh air circulation, and upgrade the school’s outdated look.

The plan will now be submitted for the provincial government’s approval.

The scope of project involves replacing all windows, doors, and exterior panels while increasing the thermal insulation.

The new exterior cladding and brick will cover the new insulation and will give the school a fresh new look.

The project will also include new exterior LED lighting that will enhance security and the appearance of the school in the evening hours.

Red Deer Public says West Park Elementary School, originally built in 1957, has had problems with temperature fluctuations and thermal comfort.

Extensions to the school were added in 1959, 1962, and 1972. New modular classrooms were added in 2012 and 2014.

The main building has original doors and single-glazed windows.

Where there are no window openings, the school is covered with thin wall panels with no thermal insulation.

Almost all operable windows are fastened shut as they are not operational and cannot be repaired.
